High School Notes
We have a great deal to be proud of here at Mesabi East High School. This week our Swim Team had 4 swimmers qualify for the State Meet. In February we had both the Boys and Girls Nordic Skiing Teams qualify for the State Meet and do very well with a 4th place boys finish and 8th for the girls, ahead of Duluth East. We had some great individual performances too at the Nordic State Meet with Anna Johnson and Reed Melicher medaling. Paul Meloche and Britta Erie were the Sub-Section 27, Art, Academics, and Athletics (Triple A) winners and were recognized at the Section 7A Hockey Final at Amsoil Arena. Britta was chosen to go on and represent Region 7A at the State level where she will be recognized at a Championship game of the Boys Basketball State Tournament held at the Target Center. The other Minnesota State High School League (MSHSL) award that recognizes outstanding student athletes during their junior year is the Excel Award. Abbey Whiting and Jack Moerke were chosen to represent Mesabi East based on the qualities they have demonstrated as student athletes.
This Thursday, March 5 is the start of the 3rd trimester, which applies to our 7th and 8th grade students. The trimester is used for exploratory classes such as Art 7, Art 8, Family and Consumer Science 8, Industrial Technology 8, Computers 7, Core Skills 7, Core Skills 8, and Physical Education 8. This exposure to a variety of enriching experiences are offered in the trimester system to help keep class sizes lower and allow students to take 3 different classes over the course of the year, in a single class period. The remainder of courses are taught for the entire year and broken down into the traditional quarter system for grading.
Students recently finished registering for 2015-2016 classes. We are fortunate to have a wide variety of offerings typical of larger schools. We are proud of the fact that Industrial Arts classes continue to be very popular courses at Mesabi East where college credit can be earned in partnership with Mesabi Range College and Applied Learning Institute support. We also offer College in the High School and Advanced Placement courses that are taught here at Mesabi East High School and allow students the opportunity to receive college credit.
