Mesabi East Pride /Registration

High School Notes

We have a great deal to be proud of here at Mesabi East High School.  This week our Swim Team had 4 swimmers qualify for the State Meet.   In February we had both the Boys and Girls Nordic Skiing Teams qualify for the State Meet and do very well with a 4th place boys finish and 8th for the girls, ahead of Duluth East. We had some great individual performances too at the Nordic State Meet with Anna Johnson and Reed Melicher medaling.  Paul Meloche and Britta Erie were the Sub-Section 27, Art, Academics, and Athletics (Triple A) winners and were recognized at the Section 7A Hockey Final at Amsoil Arena.  Britta was chosen to go on and represent Region 7A at the State level where she will be recognized at a Championship game of the Boys Basketball State Tournament held at the Target Center.  The other Minnesota State High School League (MSHSL) award that recognizes outstanding student athletes during their junior year is the Excel Award.  Abbey Whiting and Jack Moerke were chosen to represent Mesabi East based on the qualities they have demonstrated as student athletes.

This Thursday, March 5 is the start of the 3rd trimester, which applies to our 7th and 8th grade students.  The trimester is used for exploratory classes such as Art 7, Art 8, Family and Consumer Science 8, Industrial Technology 8, Computers 7, Core Skills 7, Core Skills 8, and Physical Education 8.  This exposure to a variety of enriching experiences are offered in the trimester system to help keep class sizes lower and allow students to take 3 different classes over the course of the year, in a single class period.  The remainder of courses are taught for the entire year and broken down into the traditional quarter system for grading.

Students recently finished registering for 2015-2016 classes.  We are fortunate to have a wide variety of offerings typical of larger schools.  We are proud of the fact that Industrial Arts classes continue to be very popular courses at Mesabi East where college credit can be earned in partnership with Mesabi Range College and Applied Learning Institute support.  We also offer College in the High School and Advanced Placement courses that are taught here at Mesabi East High School and allow students the opportunity to receive college credit.

To stay up to date with what is happening at Mesabi East please check out our web page http://www.mesabieast.k12.mn.us where you can link to our Daily Bulletin, view the latest blog posts, and find other current information.  A visit to our Mesabi East Schools Facebook page is another good place where you can find pictures and notices of current events.

High School Notes

As we move through December our Winter Sports and other activities are well underway. We offer more activities now for our students than at any time in our history with Mesabi East, Aurora-Hoyt Lakes and Biwabik schools. We do this because these extra-curricular activities provide an opportunity for students to excel in other areas than just the classroom. These activities also teach our students how to come together in a cooperative setting and achieve goals in a competitive environment much like the workforce they soon will be entering.

The Arts are also very important to us and we are proud of what we have to offer here too. December is a busy month for performances with Weihnachfest the place you could have seen the Jazz Band and Jazz Choir, High School Band Concert held December 11, Choir Concert December 14, and Junior High /6th Grade Band Concert December 15. Thank you to all who have come out and supported these events.

Many of our extra-curricular events can be seen through streaming video by going on High School Cube. Go to http://www.highschoolcube.com and search for Mesabi East.

To assist our primary mission in supporting academic achievement we provide our students with current technology and learning tools. Our iPads give students many benefits, with instant access to information including their textbooks. Courses are delivered through iTunes U allowing students to access current class lessons and assignments even when they are not in school. Many people have taken advantage of the iPad insurance options offered by the District. Those families that have not opted in can still sign up and are encouraged to do so.

In the fall of the year we usually publish our Annual Report on Curriculum, Instruction, and Student Achievement. This year the Annual Report is being supplanted by a new comprehensive report called the Worlds Best Work Force Plan. Look for this document to be available after it’s approval by our School Board on December 17.

To see the Worlds Best Work Force Plan you can go to our website:

Monday,  November 3 marked the beginning of our 2nd Quarter.  Report cards were emailed to students and parents.  To access the report card a student number is needed.  If a parent needs a hard copy of the report card or help finding the student number they can contact Student Services Secretary Janel Leete at 229-3321 extension 202 or This email address is being protected from spambots. Parents will receive a mailing of official results from Minnesota Comprehensive Assessments (MCA) if their child participated last year.  9th grade students did not take MCA’s as they are not required.

Our iPads give students many benefits, with instant access to information including their textbooks.  Many people have taken advantage of the iPad insurance options offered by the District to cover potential damage.  Those families that have not opted in can still sign up and are encouraged to do so.

We have many exciting events going on in school, individual classrooms, and extra-curricular events.  We are thankful the Range Times and other area media are so good at highlighting these happenings.  Facebook is another good way of communicating what is happening at school and to that end Mesabi East Schools have a Facebook page that we are now linking on our website.  We will use the Facebook page to post timely events to include school closings, emergency drills, and other current announcements while still using the page to highlight exciting events.

To find our Facebook page you can go to our website: www.mesabieast.k12.mn.us and look for our Facebook link or search for Mesabi East Schools when logged into Facebook.   If you have any good information to share about our school and would like it on Facebook contact me using This email address is being protected from spambots. Make note of the upcoming play production Paint Your Wagon running November 14,15,16.
